The Program Center

The Program Center at Helping Hands Street Mission is a place for people to come and experience community, in a number of different ways, depending on the day of the week.

Currently, due to COVID restrictions, we have had to reduce our open hours and hold minimal programs. In normal times, on Monday,  Wednesday and Friday afternoons the cafe opens up from 1-4pm as a place to drop in for a coffee and a cookie. Take it to go, or stay and enjoy connecting with community members, volunteers and staff or spend some quiet time resting, reading the paper or even playing a card or board game. During COVID, this has at times meant lower numbers inside, and other times only sidewalk engagement. We also have a computer available for people to access online resources, thanks to the Hamilton Community Foundation and the Emergency Community Support Fund.

We are eager to be open again more often to enjoy Men’s Bible Study on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm, as well as a Ladies’ Bible Study on Wednesday mornings and Men’s and Ladies’ social groups throughout the week. Often a group includes a meal as well as games or crafts. We also hope to open again in the future on Friday evenings for Barton Cafe and Saturdays for Cafe and Store open times.

On top of all these regular activities, there are normally other times of excitement throughout the month. Sunday Worship time is when the community is welcome to come in to learn about our faith, God’s love for them, and participate in a time of worship. Often a lunch is served alongside. There is also Barton Barber, which is when the space is converted into a fully functional hair salon! There are income tax preparation clinics, flu clinics, health and wellness presentations, special holiday celebrations, community meals and so much more!

We invite you to come down for a coffee and experience for yourself what it is about this space that keeps our friends coming back!
