Following God’s Lead

Dear Friends and Supporters of HHSM,Tom And Helen Norris

Tom and I are excited to let you know that the mission is coming into a new season that we know God will abundantly bless! It has been with much prayer and discernment that Tom and I believe God is calling us out into a new season of this awesome faith journey.

In April, Tom stepped down as Board Chair and I announced that I would be stepping down from my role as Executive Director. We both felt that God was calling us out of the mission in order for new people to fill the roles that we have had for 12 years. This new season of the mission brings the necessity for new vision and fresh eyes to lead it.

God is so amazing and we look forward to the next step for our lives and the life of our family who has dedicated and sacrificed time with Tom and I in order to go all in with Gods plan. Our girls were 5 and 12 when the mission was started and now they are in grade 12 and married with children, we are very much looking forward to family time together. We wanted to thank all of you who have supported the mission and our family these past 12 years and with your continued support the mission will continue to grow.

Decisions like this are not easy but are necessary for God to do what he needs to do in and through HHSM, Tom and I individually and our family. We cannot explain enough our excitement for this next phase of the journey! It never made sense when it started, God has sustained it thus far and we believe it will only get better from here. We love the mission more than the comfort of staying but more important than that we love God too much to not step out again in obedience.

Blessings and love,

Tom and Helen Norris

We praise God for His servants Tom and Helen and their faithfulness in following His call to tangibly share the gospel with the Barton Street community so many years ago. Today it is this vision “to reach out one hand at a time” that remains paramount at Helping Hands. Over the past 12 years, the mission has grown from a mobile outreach, to a free clothing store, and now includes a safe and accepting space with programs addressing the needs of this community.

As we say good-bye to Helen, we have been left with the daunting task of discerning God’s choice as the next servant to lead the mission. We are pleased to announce that Corrine Hardie will be stepping into the role of Executive Director of Helping Hands. We are also pleased to share that Marion VandenAkker will be stepping into a newly established role of Outreach Worker. Both Corrine and Marion have a long standing history with the mission and bring not only a love for our friends, but also a love for God. Please join us in welcoming them.

If you have not ventured down to Barton Street, we welcome you to pop in for a coffee and get to know our friends who make this neighbourhood their home. It takes more than thirty volunteers each week to open the door and demonstrate what loving our neighbour really looks like and it is with your prayer, financial support, and dedicated service that the mission continues to serve as a beacon of light in a dark world.
